Waste Management April Spotlight: Earth Day
April Spotlight: Earth Day—The Power of the Purchase
True sustainability starts at the beginning of an item’s life. “Pre-cycling” is the practice of reducing waste by making smart choices while you shop, ensuring that fewer natural resources are used and more Material is Repurposed.
Three Ways to “Pre-cycle” This Month:
- Choose “Recyclability”: When shopping, look for products packaged in materials that are easily repurposed, like aluminum, glass, or plain cardboard. Avoid “mixed materials” (like plastic-lined paper) that are difficult to process.
- Buy in Bulk: Choosing larger containers instead of single-use packets reduces the total amount of packaging waste. It’s a simple way to decrease your household’s daily environmental footprint.
- Bring Your Own: Earth Month is the perfect time to commit to reusable bags and containers. Every reusable bag used is one less piece of film plastic that has to be managed in the waste stream.
The Core Goal
By being a “Sustainable Shopper,” you help protect our environment from the start. Your choices this Earth Day ensure that we are preserving resources and keeping our community clean for the future.
